De La Salle University delivered a standout performance to obliterate Ateneo de Manila University with a decisive 74-61 victory in an electrifying match that showcased the Archers’ defensive prowess and offensive versatility.
From the outset, De La Salle demonstrated their dominance, led by the stellar play of Mike Phillips and Kevin Quiambao. Phillips, who finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds, was a force on both ends of the floor. Quiambao orchestrated the offense with six assists, significantly contributing to the Archers’ effective scoring.
The game, however, was far from a walkover. Ateneo, powered by Shwan Tuano and Andrew Bongo, managed to keep the contest close for much of the first half. Tuano, with 18 points, and Bongo, who added 9 points, were instrumental in challenging La Salle’s lead. Their efforts, combined with Ateneo’s impressive shooting from beyond the arc, briefly threatened to shift the momentum in their favor.
Despite a strong start from Ateneo, La Salle’s defensive scheme began to dominate. Their zone defense effectively neutralized Ateneo’s perimeter game, and the Archers capitalized on this advantage to stretch their lead. By the end of the first half, La Salle had built a crucial lead, finishing 44-40. A late surge, including a buzzer-beating tip-in by Phillips, was pivotal in maintaining the edge.
In the third quarter, La Salle’s aggressive play continued to pay off. The Archers extended their lead with key plays from Lian Ramiro and Joshua David. Ramiro’s clutch shot and David’s three-pointer solidified La Salle’s control of the game. Ateneo struggled with shooting accuracy and missed several critical opportunities, including free throws that could have narrowed the gap.
By the fourth quarter, La Salle had asserted their dominance, pushing their lead to 66-46. The Blue Eagles’ attempts to close the gap were thwarted by the Archers’ robust defense and efficient scoring. Despite a late push from Ateneo, La Salle’s lead proved insurmountable.
KQ led all Archers with 13 points and 7 assists while the relentless and tireless Mike Phillips registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
La Salle will face the UE Red Warriors next.
